Mechanical & Electrical Construction Services
NEW ENGLAND MECHANICAL SERVICES VALUE DELIVERED
NEMSI brought together their mechanical, electrical, sheet metal, building automation & controls, and service teams to deliver this multimillion dollar project in approximately seven months. NEMSI was also able to reach out to its sister company, Tucker Mechanical, to assist in the plumbing/piping work.
MECHANICAL & ELECTRICAL CONSTRUCTION SCOPE OF WORK
NEMSI was given the electrical and mechanical services portions of a 160,000 square foot office, research, production, and warehouse facility. In addition, we also were awarded the commercial HVAC, plumbing/piping, and electrical services for the construction of ADVO's 9,900 square foot stand-alone employee fitness and daycare facility, which sits adjacent to the branch facility.
ADVO FACILITIES BACKGROUND
ADVO is the nation's largest full service targeted direct mail marketing company. They are also the largest private customer of the U.S. Postal Service. ADVO employs approximately 3,700 people and operates 23 mail processing facilities, and 34 sales offices nationwide and in Canada. They launched the "America's Looking For Its Missing Children®" program in 1985,in partnership with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Their "Have You Seen Me?®" missing child cards are directly responsible for the safe recovery of 131 children.

Mechanical & Electrical Construction Design
As a result of our in-house CAD team, we were able to produce a complete set of high quality mechanical design documents in six weeks. It should be noted that our HVAC ductwork drawings are not only a design document but a fabrication document suitable for fabrication and HVAC installation. This mechanical construction service probably saved two months over the traditional way of producing shop drawings in addition to the schematic design drawings. Load calculations were done utilizing Trane's Trace-700 software.
Commercial HVAC Installation
The commercial HVAC installation, predominately sheet metal services, was fabricated in NEMSI's own ductwork fabrication shop and installed by our field mechanics to insure the highest quality HVAC installation. All of our HVAC ductwork was inspected in the shop prior to delivery of the project, and again after the HVAC system was installed, to assure that it was plump and neat.
Building Automation Control
We utilized the services of our in-house Building Automation Group to install the building automation and controls. Control of the production and warehouse areas was accomplished utilizing conventional electronic controls with night set back. Control of the office and research areas was accomplished by utilizing American Auto-Matrix direct digital control system including central monitoring and graphics.
The Carrier units we selected for this project had a much higher energy efficiency than the owners previous equipment, and included economizers. The units were selected with a cost/benefit relationship to match the owner's budgetary requirements.
Mechanical And Electrical Services Challenges
One of the hardest challenges was maintaining production through one of Connecticut's coldest winters in a number of years -- in a building that was not closed in and heated. Maintaining mechanical and electrical construction productivity in those conditions was very difficult. We also faced the challenges of installing commercial HVAC ductwork 40 feet in the air and off scissor lifts set on frozen, uneven ground. At no time throughout the mechanical services project was NEMSI behind schedule.
